Darts Veteran Peter Wright Kicks Off Poland Masters Campaign with Convincing Win
In a display of his enduring prowess, two-time world champion Peter Wright overcame a shaky start to secure a commanding 6-0 victory over television debutant Jacek Krupka at the 2024 Poland Darts Masters on Friday night.
Despite averaging just 81.98, the seasoned Scot, known as “Snakebite,” proved too much for his Polish opponent, who struggled to capitalize on his opportunities, mustering an average of only 64.91.
“I couldn’t hit anything in the first four legs,” Wright admitted in his post-match reflection. “I don’t know why, they were going alright in the practice room. Maybe there was a bit of nerves there, I don’t know. They just wouldn’t go in. I was thinking: Have I made the right choice? But they got there in the end. It’s a win.”
Krupka had six chances to take a leg against Wright, four of which came in the opening leg, but the Pole was unable to capitalize. Wright eventually claimed the first leg with a 23-darter, and followed it up with another 23-darter in the second leg, despite Krupka’s two chances to win the match.
The Scot found his rhythm in the latter stages of the contest, producing a 19-darter in the third leg and two 15-darters in the final two legs to complete the whitewash.
Although this is Wright’s first appearance at the Poland Darts Masters, the veteran player is no stranger to the World Series of Darts circuit.
“I don’t think they’ve got anyone else to pick, so they have to pick me and have their crazy clown,” he joked. “It’s great to be part of it obviously and they could have put many more players instead of my place, but they put me in and hopefully I’ll upset a few guys on the way through to win this one.”
In the quarter-finals later tonight, Wright will face teenage sensation Luke Littler, who has defeated the Scot in all three of their previous encounters this season. Wright will need to significantly improve his performance if he hopes to overcome the young phenom and continue his quest for the Poland Darts Masters title.
