Darts World Cup Kicks Off with Impressive Performances on Opening Night
Frankfurt, Germany – The highly anticipated 2024 World Cup of Darts commenced on Thursday evening, with the first round of group matches taking place in Frankfurt. The tournament features 12 groups, each comprising three nations, two of which have now played their opening encounter.
On Friday afternoon, the teams that suffered defeat in their opening matches will square off against the nations that have yet to compete. Friday evening will then see the third country in each group take on the team that emerged victorious from the opening round.
Several countries made a strong start to the tournament, recording comprehensive 4-0 victories. Austria’s Mensur Suljovic and Rowby-John Rodriguez, Croatia’s Boris Krcmar and Romeo Grbavac, and the Swedish duo of Jeffrey de Graaf and Oskar Lukasiak all secured perfect opening-night results.
Northern Ireland’s Josh Rock and Brendan Dolan, as well as France’s Thibault Tricole and Jacques Labre, were also impressive, winning their matches 4-1. Belgium (Dimitri van den Bergh and Kim Huybrechts), Ireland (William O’Connor and Keane Barry), Poland (Krzysztof Ratajski and Radek Szaganski), and Portugal (Jose de Sousa and David Gomes) secured 4-2 victories on the opening day.
Despite being considered underdogs, Germany’s Martin Schindler and Gabriel Clemens, as well as Australia’s Damon Heta and Simon Whitlock, managed to eke out narrow 4-3 wins in their respective opening encounters. The Czech Republic’s Karel Sedlacek and Adam Gawlas also secured a one-leg victory.
