Darts Enthusiasts Rejoice: James Wade Secures Last-Minute Spot for World Matchplay
In a nail-biting conclusion to the qualifying race, James Wade narrowly managed to secure the final spot for the upcoming World Matchplay darts tournament. The English left-hander, known as “The Machine,” found himself outside the qualifying positions in the lead-up to the last two ranking events. However, Wade’s perseverance paid off as he clinched the coveted spot, keeping his impressive streak of consecutive appearances at the prestigious summer event alive.
Wade’s participation in the 2023 World Matchplay will mark his 19th consecutive appearance at the tournament since 2006, an achievement that underscores his dedication and talent in the sport. Particularly in his early years, the Englishman was a formidable force at the World Matchplay, reaching the quarterfinals or better in every edition from 2006 to 2015, and even securing the title in 2007.
“Wade now ranks third on the all-time list of most World Matchplay appearances, trailing only the legendary Phil Taylor (24 times) and Steve Beaton (22 times).”
Joining Wade in the 2023 World Matchplay field are other darts superstars such as Gary Anderson and Michael van Gerwen, both set to compete in their 16th edition of the tournament. Familiar faces like Dave Chisnall, Peter Wright, and Raymond van Barneveld will also be gracing the stage in Blackpool for the 14th time.
The 31st edition of the World Matchplay is scheduled to take place from July 13 to 21, with Nathan Aspinall, the defending champion, looking to retain his title after last year’s convincing 18-6 victory over Jonny Clayton.
As the countdown to the World Matchplay begins, darts enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the thrilling action and the continued dominance of seasoned veterans like James Wade, who have etched their names in the history of this prestigious tournament.
