England Triumphs at World Cup of Darts in Frankfurt
In a dominant display, the English duo of Luke Humphries and Michael Smith captured the World Cup of Darts title in Frankfurt on Sunday. The duo, known as ‘Cool Hand Luke‘ and ‘Bullyboy‘ respectively, secured England’s first Nations tournament victory since 2016.
Prior to the event, England was already considered the heavy favorite, with the world’s number one and number three players leading the charge. As one of the top four countries, England entered the competition directly in the knockout stage, bypassing the group phase.
The English pair showcased their prowess throughout the tournament. In the round of 16, they defeated France 8-3, followed by an 8-4 victory over Northern Ireland in the quarterfinals, where they averaged an impressive 98.73. The semifinals saw them overcome Scotland 8-4, with an even higher average of 96.39.
Saving their best performance for last, Humphries and Smith swept aside the surprise finalists, Austria, with a dominant 10-6 victory. Their outstanding average of 100.62 in the final cemented their status as deserving champions.
For Smith, this marked his fifth attempt to win the World Cup of Darts for England, having finished as the runner-up in 2020. Humphries, making his debut at the tournament, managed to lift the trophy in his first outing, becoming only the fourth player to do so in the event’s history.
The victory marks a new era for English darts, with Humphries and Smith establishing themselves as the nation’s leading force in the team event. Fans and enthusiasts alike will eagerly anticipate their next appearance on the darts stage.
