Gerwyn Price’s Premier League Darts Campaign Ends on a Sour Note
In the final round of the Premier League Darts league phase held in Sheffield, Gerwyn Price, known as “The Iceman,” suffered a 6-4 defeat against reigning world champion Luke Humphries. This loss marked the end of Price’s sixth participation in the Premier League Darts tournament, as he failed to secure a single weekly title throughout the season.
Over the last six weeks of play, the former rugby player managed to record only one victory, and he reached a weekly final just twice, falling short of securing a title. With 12 points after 16 rounds of play, Price finished in seventh place, leaving only Peter Wright below him in the final standings.
In a candid admission on his official Instagram account, Price expressed his lack of enjoyment in this edition of the Premier League Darts. “So happy that is done and dusted,” the Welshman said. “End of the Premier League for me. Would love to say I’ve enjoyed it but I’d be lying.”
Price now aims to shift his focus to tournaments where prize money can contribute to his world rankings, as the Premier League Darts is considered a non-ranking event. “Looking forward to putting my full attention on ranked events from now on,” Price stated.
Throughout his career, Price has had a mixed relationship with the Premier League Darts. This year marked the first time he has managed to qualify for the playoffs, where he lost in the final to an unstoppable Michael van Gerwen.
The final standings of the 2024 Premier League Darts saw Luke Littler and Luke Humphries leading the way with four weekly titles each, followed by Michael van Gerwen and Michael Smith with four and two titles, respectively. Nathan Aspinall and Rob Cross also secured weekly titles, while Gerwyn Price and Peter Wright were the only players who failed to win a single weekly tournament.
