Blackpool, UK – July 12, 2023 – Darts enthusiasts around the world are gearing up for the highly anticipated World Matchplay, set to take place from Saturday, July 13 to Sunday, July 21 at the iconic Winter Gardens in Blackpool. This prestigious event will see the 32 best darters in the world compete for a share of the £800,000 prize pool.
Qualifying and Prize Money
The top 16 players in the world rankings and the 16 best Pro Tour players have qualified for the World Matchplay, ensuring a thrilling display of top-level darts. Each participant is guaranteed a minimum of £10,000 in prize money, with a first-round victory earning £15,000. As the competition progresses, the prizes increase, with quarterfinalists receiving £30,000, semifinalists earning £50,000, and the losing finalist taking home £100,000.
The Coveted Phil Taylor Trophy
The highly coveted title and the prestigious Phil Taylor Trophy will be awarded to the eventual champion, who will also pocket a substantial £200,000 prize. The trophy is named after the legendary Phil Taylor, who won the World Matchplay a record-breaking 16 times during his illustrious career. The Englishman bid a memorable farewell to the event in 2017, securing the title in his final appearance at the Winter Gardens.
Past Champions
Over the years, a total of 12 players have etched their names on the World Matchplay honor roll. Alongside Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen (3 titles) and Rod Harrington (2 titles) are the only other players to have won the event multiple times. Other champions include James Wade, Gary Anderson, Peter Wright, Dimitri van den Bergh, Larry Butler, Peter Evison, Colin Lloyd, Rob Cross, and Nathan Aspinall, who claimed the 2023 title.
