In a surprising turn of events, Michael van Gerwen failed to clinch his first Euro Tour title of the season at the Austrian Darts Open last weekend. The world-class Dutch player suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Ross Smith in the quarterfinals.
This marks the second time in a short span that Smith has thwarted Van Gerwen’s efforts. Just a week earlier, ‘Smudger’ had emerged victorious with a 7-6 win over the Dutchman in the semifinals of the European Darts Grand Prix in Sindelfingen.
“Another tough loss in the quarter final in Graz today. Ross Smith played well, and I just couldn’t find my rhythm,” lamented Van Gerwen on social media.
While Van Gerwen had previously missed three match darts in that encounter, this time he did not come close to securing a victory. Despite his disappointment, the seasoned professional remains optimistic, stating, “Disappointed with the result, but onto the next one!”
This setback serves as a wake-up call for Van Gerwen, who will undoubtedly be eager to bounce back and reclaim his dominance on the Euro Tour circuit.
