Darts Stars Gilding, Humphries, and Van Gerwen Advance to Last 16 at Baltic Sea Open
In a thrilling evening of darts action at the Baltic Sea Darts Open in Kiel, Germany on Saturday, three top players – Andrew Gilding, Luke Humphries, and Michael van Gerwen – all booked their spots in the prestigious last 16 round.
Former UK Open champion Andrew “Goldfinger” Gilding, who has struggled on the European Tour this year, put in a dominant performance to defeat ex-world champion Peter Wright 6-2. After dropping the opening leg, Gilding reeled off five consecutive legs before Wright managed to get one back, but it was too little too late as the 52-year-old sealed victory with a tidy 16-darter.
Meanwhile, Luke Humphries continued his impressive form following his Premier League success in Leeds last week. The in-form Englishman cruised past Sebastian Bialecki, averaging an impressive 103 and firing in three maximums and a 142 checkout en route to a comfortable victory.
In the final match of the evening, Michael van Gerwen showed his class against the talented Dutch youngster Wessel Nijman. “Mighty Mike” raced into a 3-1 lead, averaging over 111, before eventually closing out a 6-2 win despite his average dipping to a still-formidable 107.78.
These three darts stars will now look to carry their momentum into the last 16 as the Baltic Sea Darts Open reaches its climactic stages this weekend in Kiel.
