Blast from the Past: A Darts Legend’s Journey – Wayne Jones
In this retrospective, we take a captivating look back at the career of Englishman Wayne Jones, a darts icon who has etched his name in the sport’s history.
Born on April 24, 1965, in Wolverhampton, Jones began his professional journey with the BDO in the late 1980s. His breakthrough moment came in 1990 when he reached the final of the prestigious British Open, although he ultimately fell short against Alan Warriner.
The late 1990s marked a turning point in Jones’ career, as he stunned the darts world by reaching the final of the Winmau World Masters, where he faced off against the formidable Andy Fordham. Although he came up short in that title clash, it was a clear indication of his growing prowess on the oche.
Jones made his BDO World Championship debut in 2001, securing a 3-0 victory over Bob Taylor in the opening round before bowing out in the second round against Andy Fordham. The following year, he enjoyed a deeper run, defeating Tony Eccles and Ted Hankey before falling to Martin Adams in the quarterfinals.
Seeking new challenges, Jones then made the switch to the PDC, where he quickly established himself as a consistent performer. His finest moment came in 2006 when he reached the semifinals of the PDC World Championship, secured victories over the likes of James Wade, Andy Jenkins, and Gary Welding, before ultimately succumbing to Peter Manley.
In 2010, Jones experienced a resurgence, reaching the final of the European Championship, where he faced off against the legendary Phil Taylor. Although he fell 11-1 in the final, it was a testament to his resilience and adaptability in the highly competitive PDC landscape.
Sadly, Jones’ fortunes took a turn in 2016 when he failed to qualify for the World Darts Championship, resulting in the loss of his PDC Tour Card. He managed to regain the coveted card in 2018, but unfortunately, he forfeited it again in 2021.
Now, Jones can be found primarily competing on the Challenge Tour and the World Seniors Darts Tour, where he continues to showcase his skills and entertain fans with his unique playing style and unwavering passion for the sport.
