The World Matchplay, a prestigious Darts tournament, is set to captivate enthusiasts from July 13 to 21 as 32 top players compete for the coveted “Phil Taylor Trophy.” This event is a highlight of the Darts calendar, where players often showcase their exceptional skills and deliver high-caliber performances.
The World Matchplay has a rich history, celebrated for its legendary matches and impressive averages. Legendary Darts player Phil “The Power” Taylor has left an indelible mark, winning the tournament a remarkable sixteen times. In fact, of the 20 highest averages ever recorded at the World Matchplay, an astounding 14 belong to Taylor, including the highest-ever average of 114.99, which he achieved in 2010 during his first-round match against Barrie Bates. That year, Taylor went on to win the final, defeating Raymond van Barneveld with an average of 105.16.
While Taylor’s dominance is undeniable, a select few players have also etched their names in the tournament’s history. Michael van Gerwen, Adrian Lewis, and Peter “Snakebite” Wright have all secured spots among the top 10 highest averages, with van Gerwen’s 110.93 average placing him fifth, Lewis’ 110.51 in sixth, and Wright’s 109.70 and 108.13 in seventh and ninth, respectively.

However, with the current crop of Darts stars, including Luke Humphries, Luke Littler, Michael van Gerwen, Michael Smith, and Gerwyn Price, this year’s tournament could very well witness the emergence of a new name amongst the elite.
