Darts Boasts a Rich History of Extraordinary Talents

Darts has produced numerous amazing talents over the years, from unexpected champions to iconic legends. Determining the best darters of all time is a subjective task, but one can consider factors like number of titles won, consistency, and a player’s overall impact on the sport. In this article, we name our top 10 best darters of all time – a list that includes players who have dominated in both the BDO and PDC eras, each making a unique contribution to the history and popularity of darts.

Starting off, Canadian player John Part is considered one of the greatest ever, as he is the only North American world champion in both the BDO/WDF and the PDC. Part’s success helped grow the sport outside of European borders, and his record includes three world titles – one with the BDO in 1994, and two with the PDC in 2003 and 2008. His 2003 World Championship final against Phil Taylor is regarded as one of the greatest matches of all time.

Next, Adrian Lewis was known for his natural darting talent and smooth, high-scoring playing style. A protégé of Phil Taylor, ‘Jackpot’ went on to win two world titles of his own at the PDC in 2011 and 2012, becoming only the third player to successfully defend his first world crown.

Another pioneer was Dennis Priestley, who played a crucial role in the split from the BDO and the creation of the PDC, becoming the first world champion under the new organization in 1994. Priestley had a famous rivalry with Phil Taylor, often emerging victorious against the legendary ‘Power’.

Renowned for his colorful personality and appearance, Peter Wright has become a true icon of darts. ‘Snakebite’ has made the final of every major tournament since 2014, winning two world titles, two European Championships, two World Cups, and numerous other prestigious events.

The accomplished John Lowe won three world titles across three different decades, cementing his longevity and consistency. Lowe is also known for throwing the first televised 9-darter in 1984, a historic milestone for the sport.

Smooth-throwing Scotsman Gary Anderson has won the PDC World Darts Championship twice, in 2015 and 2016, and been a finalist on three other occasions. His participation has helped grow the popularity of darts worldwide.

Five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld enjoyed immense popularity, with his devoted ‘Barney Army’ of fans supporting him globally. His epic 2007 PDC final victory over Phil Taylor is considered one of the greatest moments in darts history.

Bristow, known as ‘The Crafty Cockney’, dominated the BDO in the 1980s, winning five world titles. He played a crucial role in the professionalization and popularization of darts as a spectator sport.

At just 17 years old, Michael van Gerwen experienced a major breakthrough by winning the World Masters in 2006. Since then, he has become a darts juggernaut, amassing over 60 televised titles, including three PDC World Championships.

Ultimately, Phil Taylor stands above all others as the best darter of all time. ‘The Power’ won an unmatched 16 world titles, along with countless other major honors, and was a trailblazer in professionalizing the sport. His unparalleled dominance, records, and lasting impact cement his status as the greatest player ever.
