Premier League Darts: Michael Smith Secures Playoff Berth with Sheffield Victory
In a thrilling showdown, Michael Smith clinched the final golden ticket for the Premier League Darts playoffs on Thursday night. The former world champion faced off against his fierce rival Nathan Aspinall in a captivating contest, emerging victorious to secure his spot in the postseason.
Relieved of the immense pressure, Smith went on to claim the weekly title in Sheffield, defeating rising stars Luke Littler and Luke Humphries. This was Smith’s second weekly triumph in the competition, having previously won the opening night in Cardiff back in February.
As the fourth-ranked player in the final standings, Smith will take on the teenage sensation Littler in the semifinals on Thursday, May 23, during the playoff festivities. Despite Littler’s impressive debut season, which saw him finish at the top of the leaderboard, Smith remains optimistic about his chances.
“I know I’ve got a good record against Luke, but it doesn’t matter now. We’re all going to be at 100%,” Smith told Sportsboom.com. While recognizing Littler’s exceptional abilities, the St. Helens darter believes his own world championship pedigree could give him an edge.
Smith has no qualms about the spotlight shining on Littler, acknowledging that it ultimately benefits the entire Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) community.
“There’s a few that are getting upset with him, but listen, my pockets get full every time he gets mentioned, so it’s in our best interests that we look after him,” he said.
As the excitement builds towards the Premier League Darts playoffs, Michael Smith’s triumph in Sheffield has secured his place in the coveted postseason, setting the stage for a thrilling encounter against the rising star Luke Littler.
