Darts Veteran Deta Hedman Opts Out of WDF Europe Cup
Renowned darts player Deta Hedman, a fixture on the England team since the 1990s, has decided to skip the upcoming WDF Europe Cup, a prestigious nations tournament for European darts associations affiliated with the World Darts Federation (WDF). The event is scheduled to take place in Slovakia from September 25th to 28th.
Hedman, who has served as the team captain, has been a driving force behind England’s success at the WDF Europe Cup over the past three decades. She has won several individual and team accolades, including the singles title in 1994, four pairs championships (1994, 1996, 2018, and 2022), four team titles (2014, 2016, 2018, and 2022), and six ladies’ championships (1994, 1996, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2022).
The 64-year-old has also experienced similar triumphs at the WDF World Cup, where she claimed the singles title in 2013 and the pairs tournament in 1995, 2011, 2013, and 2013. Hedman has further led the English women’s team to victory in the team event in 2015 and 2019, while also contributing to the country’s overall success in 1995, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2019, and 2023.
“It’s breaking my heart to do so.” – Deta Hedman
In a Facebook post, Hedman expressed her anguish at the decision, stating, “It’s breaking my heart to do so.” While she has not disclosed the specific reasons for her withdrawal, Hedman emphasized that “the well being of England Darts is paramount.” However, according to sources, Hedman’s decision may be linked to the likely selection of Noa-Lynn van Leuven for the Dutch women’s team.
Hedman is known for her outspoken stance against the inclusion of transgender athletes in the women’s darts circuit. In May, she withdrew from the WDF Denmark Open when faced with the prospect of competing against Van Leuven in the quarterfinals.
Despite her absence from the competition, Hedman plans to travel to Slovakia to support her English teammates. She has indicated that she will cover the cost of the trip herself, highlighting her unwavering commitment to the sport and her national team.
The upcoming WDF Europe Cup promises to be a thrilling event, with Hedman’s withdrawal adding an intriguing subplot to the proceedings. Darts enthusiasts will eagerly await further updates on the reasons behind Hedman’s decision and the impact it may have on England’s performance in the tournament.
