Defending Champion Gerwyn Price Set to Battle at the NEO.bet European Darts Open
Gerwyn Price, the reigning champion, is gearing up to defend his title at the upcoming NEO.bet European Darts Open, scheduled to take place from June 21-23 in the Ostermann-Arena, Leverkusen. The event, the eighth PDC European Tour event of the year, will feature a stacked field of 48 players competing for the £30,000 top prize.
In a potential rematch of last year’s final, Price might face off against Dirk van Duijvenbode, the 2023 runner-up. World number one Luke Humphries and three-time World Champion Michael van Gerwen are also set to take the stage during this highly anticipated tournament.
The first-round action, which will be broadcast live on PDCTV, Viaplay, and DAZN, will feature 16 matches on Friday. German World Cup player Gabriel Clemens is set to clash with 2023 runner-up Van Duijvenbode, while 2023 World Champion Michael Smith will face ten-time TV title winner James Wade. Five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld will compete against Poland’s top player, Krzysztof Ratajski.
“The European Darts Open is one of the longest-running Euro Tour tournaments, with the first edition played in 2012 and won by Raymond van Barneveld. Michael van Gerwen holds the record for the most titles at this event, with five.”
The seeded players will join the competition in Saturday’s second round, where Price will begin his title defense against either Clemens or Van Duijvenbode. Humphries, the top seed, will face either Van Barneveld or Ratajski, while Van Gerwen, aiming for his sixth European Darts Open title, will take on Jamie Hughes or Dylan Slevin.
The action-packed event will culminate on Sunday with the last 16 matches, followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final in the evening session.
In 2023, Gerwyn Price emerged victorious, defeating Dirk van Duijvenbode 8-7 in a thrilling final. As the defending champion, Price will be looking to retain his title and add to his growing collection of darts accolades.
